Will We Ever See This Again?

10th July 2026
A couple of weeks ago David Askham posted an article about how one picture can tell a story - to quote David:

"A picture can rarely tell a whole story; but it can pose questions which an enquiring mind might answer."

David's article set me thinking if I had got a suitable single picture that could lead to thoughts on the state of our planet and the effect we are having on it.

We are all currently in the middle of another heatwave with absolutely no sign of rain, gardens are parched and reservoirs are too low for comfort.

The photograph of dawn on a snowy, winter's morning reminds me of when I used to venture into Derbyshire's countryside driving carefully to try to capture the feel of a winter's day as it starts.
This was taken some 20 years ago. In the last 10 years the number of cold, snowy mornings can be counted on one hand and in the last five years I can not remember a single one.

The photograph was taken on a Leica M6 with a 35mm Summicron using Fuji Sensia, a film that has long disappeared and one that I always thought matched my vision of colour.

Members who regularly attend our weekends my remember this photograph being successful in one of our competitions.

Photo comment By David Askham: Thank you, Ken, for picking up the gauntlet and continuing the theme of 'One picture - one story'. Climate change is a clear example of the importance of photographing the familiar before it is lost from human experience. I guess that you will be transported back in time and can recall the excitement of that moment, when looking at your wintery landscape. Your breath would be frozen in a cloud before you. And when your fingers go numb with cold, it is time to head for home. Happy days!
Photo comment By Pam: Yes Ken I remember seeing it at one of our competitions. I think it is lovely. I wonder if we will have any snow again in the future the way things are going with Global Warming.
Photo comment By Don Morley: Lovely picture Ken, and so refreshing amid this so awful heatwave Indeed I could almost wisn for us to have some of that Snow now!
Photo comment By Ken Davis: Thank you Don, Pam & David. There's a print of this hanging in our living room and I keep looking at it while sitting between fans blowing cold air!!
